A benchmark of British engineering

Often compared to a Rolls-Royce for its quality of construction and finish, the Brough Superior combined engineering excellence with sporting intent. Introduced in 1922, the JAP-powered SS80 earned its name from its guaranteed 80mph top speed, quickly gaining a reputation for performance and reliability.

By the mid-1930s, the SS80 had evolved into the SS80 Special, fitted with an engine built by Associated Motor Cycles. This 982cc sidevalve V-twin, similar to that used in the Matchless Model X, incorporated Brough’s preferred ‘knife-and-fork’ big-end bearing arrangement.

Production of the model continued until 1939, with this example dating from the final year of manufacture.

A documented and traceable history

Registration number FWE 884 is one of approximately 460 Matchless-engined SS80s produced, with around 300 believed to survive.

This particular machine was despatched from the Brough Superior works by rail on 9th January 1939 to Frank B Roper Ltd of Sheffield, whose supplier’s plaque remains fitted to the rear mudguard.

Ownership can be traced back to at least 1961, when it was recorded in the buff continuation logbook in the name of Mr J D Lower of Whitchurch, Cardiff. Correspondence from the Brough Superior Owners Club in 1968 confirms that the Club was not aware of the machine’s survival at that time, while also verifying its identifying numbers and noting its association with Alex Thom Motorcycles.

The current private vendor acquired the machine in 1982 from Mr W D Jones, former proprietor of Alex Thom Motorcycles, where the motorcycle had been on display following the closure of the business.

Importantly, the engine, frame, gearbox and fuel tank numbers all correspond with the original factory record card.

Comprehensive history file and supporting material

The Brough is offered with an extensive history file, including correspondence, original and copied documentation, logbooks, insurance records, club material, and period literature.

Additional items supplied with the motorcycle include tax discs, spare components, and maintenance literature.

The machine has been run on E5 fuel with a lead-replacement additive. It was checked over by a Brough Superior specialist in 2025, and while recommissioning before road use is advised following a period of inactivity, it is expected to require minimal work before returning to service.

A rare opportunity at Stafford

As a highly original, matching-numbers example of the SS80 Special, this 1939 Brough Superior represents a significant opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

It will be offered as part of the Bonhams Spring Stafford Sale, held during The International Classic MotorCycle Show (sponsored by Carole Nash) at Staffordshire County Showground.
